CLIMATE: At up to 25 feet above sea level, Charlotte County enjoys a climate characterized as sub-tropic, where extremes

Enjoy warm temperatures year-round. Prevailing winds are an easterly average of 12-18 m.p.h. The annual average temperature is
73.9°. The average of the low month, January, is 63°; the average of the high month, August, is 82.8°. During the summer the
temperature is usually in the low 90s during the day and in the low 70s during the night.
Rainfall averages 52.55 inches a year, with approximately two-thirds occurring during June through September. These rains have a
cooling effect on the hot summer days.
POPULATION: The population of unincorporated Charlotte County is 140,425, in addition to the City of Punta Gorda with 17,111
residents. The total population is 157,536 with the annual county growth rate projected at 3%.
Seasonal population includes part-time inhabitants who may live for several months of the year in Charlotte County or the City of
Punta Gorda, but who have usual residences elsewhere. Population increases by an estimated 30% from January through April.
LOCATION: Charlotte County is on the Gulf Coast of southwest Florida, 50 miles south of Sarasota on U.S. Highway 41 (the
historic Tamiami Trail), and 24 miles north of Ft. Myers. Charlotte County is within easy access of both Orlando (125 miles) and
Miami (162 miles). Interstate Highway I-75 has six
interchanges in Charlotte County, exits 179 to 158
BEACHES: Over twelve miles of sandy Gulf beaches share the coastline with the mangrove forests of Charlotte Harbor.
GOLF: Choose from over sixteen magnificent courses throughout Charlotte County. Courses range from executive to championship
level, each with scenic vistas and spectacular landscapes.
ATTRACTIONS: Charlotte County features over 70 parks and recreational areas. Take a unique wildlife buggy tour through the
silent beauty of an untouched cypress swamp. Set sail on a small boat cruise. Camp out under the stars. Snorkel right off your
canoe in the Peace River. Ride a bicycle alongside real Bison at Babcock's Wilderness Adventure, or come face-to-face with a gopher
tortoise on an exhilarating hike through Cedar Point.

County Airport, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), Southwest Florida International Airport, Ft. Myers, (RSW), and

MYAKKA STATE FOREST
Myakka State Forest is located in the
south western portion of Sarasota County within the city limits of North Port. The forest was purchased in 1995 as part of the
Myakka Estuary Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) project using Preservation 2000 and Save Our Rivers funds. Using sound
ecosystem management, the Division of Forestry practices multiple-use in managing the forest resources which includes timber
management, outdoor recreation, wildlife management, and both ecological and hydrological restoration. the Southwest Water
Management District provided funding to purchase half of the state forest and is an important cooperator in the management of the
property, especially in regard to hydrological management.
Recreational opportunities on Myakka State Forest include camping, hiking, off-road bicycling, horseback riding, wildlife viewing
and small game hunting opportunities that include wild hogs (Visit MyFWC.com/hunting for information).
The streams on the forest provide a source for fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. Myakka State Forest contains 2 hiking
trails (North Loop and South Loop) that are included in the Florida Division of Forestry's Trailwalker Hiking Program, as well as
horse trails in the Trailtrotter Equestrian Program.
